Get Out of the Salt Shaker!

We find this interesting passage in Matthew 5:

“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. You are the light of the world – like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. (Matthew 5:13-15, NLT)

You and I, as followers of Jesus are salt and light for the world!

Salt, to be useful, has to get out of the salt-shaker into the food. It only affects things it comes in contact with.

Jesus needs us to rub shoulders with people who need Him so we can share Him.

Light is quite similar. It’s no good if it’s hidden away. It needs to be in a place where it can shine out and light up a path leading to Jesus.

And how does all this work? Jesus gives us this answer in the next verse!

“… Let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5:16, NLT)

While our good deeds do not make us more acceptable to God or contribute to our salvation, they are salt and light to others.

Your actions of love, reaching out to help meet the needs of those you come in contact with day by day, will point them to Jesus and draw them to Him.

Ask God to give you some opportunities today to love others for Him. This is a prayer He loves to answer.

So, get out of the salt shaker! Let your light shine!
